Some interesting links: 4.23.09
Here are some links I found interesting.
- Windows PowerShell Blog: Soliciting New Verbs – With v2 of PowerShell Microsoft has released a list of approved verbs when creating your own cmdlets.
- Researchers Find Massive Botnet On Nearly 2 Million Infected Consumer, Business, Government PCs – DarkReading – Is anyone really surprised that Governments can’t get the malware situation under control on their networks?
- Windows Incident Response: Timeline Analysis – XP Restore Points – This is pretty cool that you can do some timeline analysis on XP machines during Incident Response.

Honing your Command Line Kung Fu
Being from a heavy Windows background, the command line isn’t one of the things that you spend a lot of time at when administering systems. However, a couple of years ago I made it a priority to get more comfortable at the command line in not only Windows but *nix operating systems as well.
The sad part of all of this is that I still know people who are afraid of the command line and run away from it like a little kid does from needles. For those people who are afraid, you shouldn’t be. There are some advantages to using the command line that you just can’t get from the GUI. With the command line you can:
- Automate repetitive tasks – Who doesn’t like to do less work?
- Track your previous commands – You defiantly can't do this with a GUI. Once you click OK or Apply you can’t see the changes you made.
- A sense of accomplishment. Who doesn’t like learning new things. It would take years to learn everything that you can do at a command prompt.
So today I am going to give you a couple of resources to help you master your Command Line Kung Fu.
- commandlinefu.com
- Command Line Kung Fu Blog
- Microsoft’s Command-line reference A-Z
- Linux Commands – A practical reference
If you have any sites you want to share, leave them in the comments and I will update the post!
Enjoy!

Welcome!
Welcome to the Packet Crazy blog. This is the new official blog of Matthew Johnson, also known as MWJComputing. You can find more out about me here. I have an old blog located here, but that was hosted on a site that is dedicated to Active Directory and identity related services. I used to focus heavily on that, but now I have moved into different things. This blog is focused on those new areas of technology I have moved into.
Some of the areas we will cover are:
- Security (Network and OPSEC)
- PowerShell / Scripting
- Exchange (with some Active Directory)
- Random topics (ranging from cool technology to anything happening in the news)
I am hoping to update this blog much more than I did the other one. So sit back and enjoy the ride. If you have any comments, questions or just want to get in touch, leave a comment here or contact me one of the ways on this page.
Thanks!
Matt
